Anthropic puts $16.8B of quarterly revenue on the table
CEO Dario Amodei and CFO Krishna Rao told prospective investors at a closed-door San Francisco meeting on Oct 14 that Q3 revenue hit $16.8 billion — up 45% from $11.6 billion in Q2 and roughly triple Q1 — and that the company turned profitable on an adjusted basis for the first time, with an 85% adjusted gross margin. Formal IPO marketing could start as soon as the week of Nov 9, with investors estimating a $1.8–2T valuation.
Why it matters: These numbers reset the commercial benchmark for the API economy: inference at scale is a software-margin business, and Anthropic’s disclosure that it curtailed rivals distilling Claude — about 5–7% of its revenue — tells builders the train-on-competitor-APIs shortcut is closing.
Figures come from closed-room attendee accounts, not a public filing; adjusted profitability is not GAAP. The prospectus may tell a different story.
